Every organization has a path. Some intentional. Others accidental.
Looking back it’s easy to see the path and where you’ve been. Looking ahead? That’s a whole different game.
Several leaders gathered more than sixteen months ago to discuss the path of our organization. After twenty years of investment we found ourselves at a critical point. A decision was to be made.
Were we to maintain what had been built and celebrate the success of reaching a significant size and stage of impact? Or were we just getting started?
For many years our church much like many churches have celebrated growth, that is growth by addition. Many churches have committed to and achieved the goal of connecting people to the truth and love of Christ. But why after years of pouring into those who show up each week, were so many still sensing a void? And increasingly expressing a need and desire to do more, to be a part of something more?
If we look at what our purpose and what truly fulfills, it’s painfully clear we have left out two obvious pieces. And it’s not just for churches. These missing steps are to be present in any healthy and intentional organization.
We are achieving the first two but missing the final and arguably the most important two steps in our path. We had found a way to invite people to Experience and to be a part of purpose. We were able to encourage critical mass towards getting Connected into Community. No one would argue with these steps or goals. Both are important, critical even, for health and growth.
We had built a path to achieve growth by addition and that’s where the problem began to become clear.
Addition was never the goal. Healthy organizations don’t grow by single addition. Healthy and thriving organization gain traction by Multiplication. It’s exponential. It’s almost uncontrollable. To have Multiplication we have to raise the bar, we build on additional steps beyond just connecting.
The goal is and always has been multiplication. Success by addition is a huge barrier, it’s inefficient and ultimately a barrier you’ll have to remove. I’ll talk about that later in more detail. For now, check out the simple path we’ve put our hearts and sweat into. It’s not new actually but it’s becoming more clear with how many churches and organizations are doing just the opposite.
If you know churches, organizations or leaders stuck in the experience or connect zone and want to move towards influence and multiplication but don’t know where to start, we need to talk. Receive more detail about how to bring multiplication to your church or organization.
